NAE™ Project: Update July 4, 2010 Ladies and Gentlemen: What a way to celebrate Independence Day! Team NAE assembled at Sanderson Field in Shelton, Washington, to put on our own spectacular pyrotechnic display. Ready for the noise and fire were Rich Pengelley, Bill Eckberg, Russell Garlow, Dave Selby, Chris Hughes, Steve and Libby Wallace, Larry Martinson and son Dustin, Rob Martinson, Von Armstrong, Levi Swet, Cam, Alex and Rachel Shadle, and Tom Tiede. Jerry Lamb, our friend and sponsor from LevX® and designer of the car's unique magnetic braking system came down from Port Angeles, and Ed and Elaine Shadle and Keith Zanghi were present as the boss posse. Chris Greene absent because he was camping with his grandmother, but his parents Tad and Angie were able to make it. Apologies to anyone who was left out. We all worked hard and enjoyed the day. With the gracious help of the folks at Sanderson Field and the Port of Shelton providing the perfect venue, the test of our newly tuned jet engine went off without a hitch. Our good sponsor, S&S Turbine Services, Ltd, returned it to us in fine shape. The static test today was to assure that the ignition system, fuel system, and electrical components were all working at optimum performance and would allow the huge 45,500 horsepower turbo jet engine to be throttled up to the full afterburner stage. Plans were followed to conduct two test sessions....one in the afternoon and one in the late evening in order to record the full effect of that amazing afterburner flame thrust. The break between sessions allowed time for some R&R and some traditional barbequed burgers and hot dogs. In addition to testing the engine, our photo teams were busy setting up and documenting testing activities and Steve Wallace worked from his mobile data acquisition equipment, recording and analyzing sound forces.
After the 56 foot long 7 ton car was unloaded it was maneuvered into position and chained to three tie down points...a very necessary process in harnessing that tremendous afterburner power. Thanks to Small & Sons Oil Distributing Company, 150 gallons of provided fuel was added into the tank. One of the team's young interns, Dustin Martinson was drafted to "ride the hump" and pump the fuel. During both test sessions, the engine performed beautifully at each stage, resulting in a deafening roar and a 20+ foot full plume of jet fire shooting from the tail cone at maximum AB. It was indeed a very happy 4th of July for Team NAE™. On the Newsstands If you own a Falcon Business Jet, then you have seen the North American Eagle in the latest issue of Falconer Magazine, Issue 36 / 2010. If you're not lucky enough to own a multi-million dollar business jet, the you can read The Quest To Be The Fastest Car On Earth written by Grant Kielczewski, Managing Editor on line. It features extraordinary photos of our July 2009 test session at The Black Rock Desert, and tells the story of tenacity and resourcefulness as our team challenges the 763 mph world land speed record.
